Bernina Express Route

Bernina Express Route

Bernina Express Route

The Bernina Express Route offers a journey through unparalleled natural beauty and engineering marvels. This panoramic narrow-gauge railway route is widely considered one of the most scenic train journeys in the world.

The train travels from Chur in eastern Switzerland to Tirano in northern Italy, with the Bernina Express Chur route serving as the northern gateway to this iconic Alpine journey. The route is part of the Rhaetian Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its engineering marvels and breathtaking alpine scenery.

Join us as we explore the Bernina Express Route in detail, with a special focus on the path taken by the Bernina Railway.

About the Bernina Express Route

The Bernina Express route is actually a combination of two separate railway lines. Highlight follows highlight on board the “red trains”, which travel over the highest railway lines in Europe and the steepest in the world, offering passengers a unique journey through 55 tunnels and over 196 bridges.

  • Albulabahn (Albula Railway): This section runs from Chur in eastern Switzerland to St. Moritz, forming the first leg of the Bernina Express Chur to St. Moritz route and showcasing some of the most impressive engineering on the journey. The Albula Railway is known for its engineering marvels as it navigates the Albula Alps. Passengers can marvel at the impressive structure of the Landwasser Viaduct.
  • Berninabahn (Bernina Railway): This section takes over from St. Moritz and continues the journey to Tirano in northern Italy. The Bernina Railway tackles the Bernina Pass, the highest railway station in Europe, offering breathtaking alpine scenery with glaciers, lakes, and charming villages.

Passengers can choose to travel the entire route from Chur to Tirano or take shorter segments on either the Albulabahn or Berninabahn. This flexibility allows travelers to customize their journey based on their time and interests.

In our articles, we put the focus on the Berninabahn (Bernina Railway), the section from St. Moritz to Tirano. This leg of the journey is nothing short of spectacular, offering a continuous display of alpine beauty and impressive feats of railway engineering.

What is the Most Beautiful Section of the Bernina Express?

The most spectacular stretch of the Bernina Express lies between Pontresina and Tirano. Along this route, passengers experience a stunning sequence of natural beauty and engineering marvels – from snow-covered glaciers to Mediterranean valleys.

Top highlights along this section include:

  • Ospizio Bernina – the highest point of the route at 2,253 meters, set amidst dramatic alpine terrain
  • Palü Glacier – a majestic glacier located directly alongside the tracks
  • Alp Grüm – a panoramic stop with sweeping views over the Val Poschiavo
  • Val Poschiavo – a lush southern valley with a distinct Italian character
  • Brusio Spiral Viaduct – a remarkable piece of railway engineering where the train makes a full loop on an open track

Seating tip: For the best views of glaciers, lakes, and the viaduct, sit on the right-hand side when traveling from Pontresina to Tirano, or on the left-hand side in the opposite direction.

Bernina Express: Route of the Berninabahn (Bernina Railway)

The Berninabahn is the southern section of the Bernina Express and one of the highlights of the UNESCO-listed Rhaetian Railway. This spectacular route runs from St. Moritz in Switzerland to Tirano in Italy, crossing high Alpine passes, glaciers, lakes, and historic engineering landmarks along the way.

Travelers experience dramatic changes in landscape and culture, from pristine mountain scenery to the warmer Italian valleys. Whether in summer or winter, the Berninabahn offers some of the most scenic moments of the entire Bernina Express journey.

Note: For key sights, we indicate whether they appear on the left or right side of the train. Most highlights are on the right when traveling from St. Moritz to Tirano; reverse this if starting in Italy.

  • St. Moritz (Start): The journey begins in St. Moritz, passing the Leaning Tower and Upper Engadin scenery before heading toward Pontresina and the Bernina massif.
  • Pontresina & Morteratsch Glacier (right side): Beyond Pontresina, the train passes Surovas and Morteratsch, where the Morteratsch Glacier appears close to the tracks on the right.
  • Montebello Curve: Near Morteratsch, the railway forms the famous Montebello Curve, offering one of the clearest panoramic views of glaciers and surrounding peaks.
  • Diavolezza Area: Climbing higher, the route passes Diavolezza and Lagalb, where forests fade and high-Alpine landscapes dominate the scenery.
  • Lago Bianco (right side): At the Bernina Pass, which gave the “red train” its name the train follows Lago Bianco, marking the watershed between northern and southern Europe and the language transition toward Italian.
  • Ospizio Bernina (right side): At 2,253 meters, Ospizio Bernina marks the highest point of the Bernina Railway, surrounded by snowfields, lakes, and dramatic Alpine terrain.
  • Alp Grüm: After passing galleries and tunnels, the train reaches Alp Grüm, a panoramic station overlooking Val Poschiavo and one of the route’s most iconic viewpoints.
  • Val Poschiavo Descent: Descending past Cavaglia, Cadera, and Privilasco, the railway winds downhill through steep curves into greener landscapes without using a rack system.
  • Lago di Poschiavo (left side): Between Le Prese and Miralago, turquoise Lake Poschiavo appears on the left, framed by villages, vineyards, and Mediterranean-style scenery.
  • Brusio Circular Viaduct: Near Brusio, the train crosses the famous spiral viaduct, looping in a full circle to lose altitude on open track.
  • Tirano (End): After Campocologno, the route enters Italy and ends in Tirano, surrounded by palm trees, vineyards, and the Sanctuary of Madonna di Tirano.

Stations & Stops Along the Bernina Express Route

Along the Switzerland Bernina Express route, the panoramic Bernina Express typically stops at around 13 major stations on the full Chur–Tirano journey, depending on the timetable and season. These include key hubs such as Chur, St. Moritz, Pontresina, Alp Grüm, and Tirano, which serve as the main boarding and exit points for most travelers.

You can see the exact station names and stop sequence on the route map below. The Bernina Railway itself features many additional local stations, including Morteratsch, Cavaglia, Le Prese, Miralago, and Campocologno. These smaller stops are served by the Bernina Red Trains (regional service), which stops at around 40 stations in total along the combined Albula and Bernina lines, allowing passengers to board, stop, and continue their journey at almost any point along the route.
